Flexible and visible school bus stops
01.Brief
SYTRAL and TRANSDEV are rolling out public transport services across Lyon and its surroundings, including school transportation. They consulted us on two specific challenges in rural areas: How can we shift from a heavy infrastructure approach to a more agile and temporary network? How can we make the infrastructure network more visible to residents, drivers, and current and future users (...)? The agency started from these issues to design a 2-year operational innovation program, tailored to SYTRAL's resources and ambitions.
Facilitate your innovation program to free up your time
The chosen usage scenario considers the entire lifecycle of the system and simplifies the reuse with a ground-fixing screw (avoiding the use of single-use materials like concrete). It offers a versatile product that can utilize existing structures for a lightweight installation. The product’s architecture is simple and optimized, and its design reflects this through a configuration of metal sheets that converge around the light source.
The FLAG system offers numerous advantages:
- Increased visibility that creates a sense of safety during waiting times for children and their parents.
- Unanimous approval from users (children, bus drivers, parents...), making public transport easier to use.
- A proprietary system that is easy to deploy thanks to a lightweight industrial design and supports local businesses.
- A new approach to infrastructure’s network that creates strong differentiation in tender processes.
02.Ecolizer 2.0
Validating assumptions with simple eco-design tools
To complete the indicators, we assessed both new and old bus stop poles using the Ecolizer 2.0. This eco-design tool allows for product comparison in terms of environmental impact.
The results support the usage scenario:
- For equivalent functions, FLAG is 66% less impactful.
- Adding the lighting function (PCB, battery, solar panel) reduces the gap to 35%.These figures do not take into account the reusability of the FLAG system. It can easily be unscrewed to change its location, unlike a concrete base.
Results
Positive impact
Increased visibility for a more attractive service.
Circularity
Mobile stations based on the traffic along the transport line.
Simplicity
By using what is already in place (poles, pylons, etc.), FLAG is reduced to its simplest form: a display + a light fixture. A signature and minimalist product architecture to optimize costs.
