Reindustrializing through design: the made‑in-France water fountain serving the circular economy
01.Brief
When a factory is running at a standstill, design can become a decisive lever for revitalization. We supported EDAFIM, a French water fountain manufacturer, in the development of a new strategic product, designed from the outset to be industrially optimized, economically competitive, and commercially differentiated.

Rethinking the product to relaunch the industrial tool
In a highly cost-sensitive fountain rental market, we applied a rigorous design-to-cost approach. Every choice—shape, assembly, and materials—was guided by a dual requirement: controlling cost while creating an object perceived as reliable, hygienic, and desirable. To achieve this, our team of designers worked hand in hand with the manufacturing teams from the very first sketches.

Making design a tool for differentiation
Our approach was based on a strong belief: product design is a key factor in value creation. By working on uses, lines, materials, and finishes, we developed a formal language consistent with the brand's ambition.

The service area, the central element of the product, was designed as an intuitive and generous interface, at bottle height — a new standard in the water world. The pictograms we created can be applied to a whole range of future products, reinforcing the visual identity and readability of the offer. The ambient lighting, understated and functional, provides information on the operating status, while increasing the perceived quality of the experience.

02.Product Identity

What we implemented:
- A soft, smooth, reassuring, and easy-to-maintain shape
- An interface designed for evolving functions (screen, sensors, etc.)
- A clear hierarchy of uses through design
- A simple differentiation, far from gimmicky effects
Perceived quality: working with materials without exploding costs
The perception of quality often depends on the details. We have carried out extensive work selecting materials and finishes to create an impression of robustness and care, while respecting strict industrial constraints.

Working closely with internal teams, our designers sourced solutions compatible with mass production and economic objectives. Decorative wood, laminate, painted or textured sheet metal, decorative films... Each material was evaluated for its impact/cost ratio and its ability to enhance the perceived experience.
Materials used:
- Laminates and decorative wood for a warm presence
- Textured or painted industrial sheet metal for durability
- Decorative films for customization and product line consistency
- High-end alternatives were discarded if not compatible with margin objectives
